A Cornucopia of Bullshit
Hold on tight people, there’s a lot of bullshit to cover.
The jobs report:
So economic recovery and jobs seem to be the latest bell the Republicans are ringing in an attempt to make the president look bad. That tactic would be somewhat more convincing had they not spent the past four years doing everything in their power to block recovery, but OK. Whatever.
Today the September jobs report came out and lookie thar! Things got a bit better. Not, you know, a lot better, but somewhat.
The response of any rational person would be something along the lines of “Well, that’s nice.”
Rule #1 of dealing with the right wing of American politics. Crazy does not react as if it is sane. Thus the reaction of the right is not rational. It’s is something that much more resembles “CONSPIRACY!” Because that’s what happens in right wing land when something they don’t like happens.
Various voices on the left.
Let’s not play like the left is all sweetness and light. We have our fucking morons too. Here’s one of them.
I’m voting for Obama.
The short reasons are: I’m voting for Obama because nobody promised me a pony. Also, I live in reality. Finally, I reject the premise that not getting exactly what I want constitutes voting for an “evil.”
There are things that the president has done that have made me shot “WTF!” at my computer. Here’s the thing, I never expect to agree with the majority of any president’s decisions. Because, like I said, I live in reality. I expect presidential candidates to lie about their intentions and their abilities. If candidates told us the truth, no one would vote for them. The president’s ability to accomplish anything is hindered by Congress and that is by design. So, unless you’ve got a Congress that is not only of the same party but of the same mindset, the best any president can do is half measures and compromise. Given that? This president has done pretty well. Has he made decisions that I consider immoral? Yep. He’s a politician. That’s what they do.
Totally aside from my reasons, this article is just badly written! His reasons are myriad and while some of them are valid his conclusion does not make sense as it has only the most ephemeral connection to any points he makes earlier.
Vote in the hopes of overcoming the two party system? He means that?
The idea of something other than a two party system in America is cute but unrealistic. In order for a multiple party system to work we would have to fundamentally rework the whole of the government. Some people think that’s exactly what we should do. And like I said, that’s cute but what would happen, is that the massively funded right wing astroturf groups would win that fight and they would win it big. So we would end up in something that strongly resembled A Handmaiden’s Tale and no thank you. We’re more than close enough to that as it is.
Completely aside from that, multiple party systems still generally end up as functionally two party. They may be coalitions of various parties, but you still pretty much get a group that is sort of right, a group that is sort of left and the fringers.
We have to keep in mind that correlation is not causation. Multiple party systems in non-USian nations seem to lead toward more left leaning societies because the people are more left leaning. In other words, the government doesn’t create a liberal society. Liberal societies vote for more liberal governments. American society? Not anywhere near as liberal as others. Never has been. Will never be.
So the question that I would pose in response to the articles in the OP is pretty simple. Why are there deal breakers at all? I’m not dating the president. I’m not going to break up with a candidate. That’s not how this works. You look at the options and decide who you think is the best person for the job. What the author of the article calls deal breakers, I call disengagement. The other word for that is surrender, or a temper tantrum. Not impressed.
Yeah so that happened. It was…I don’t even know. I HAD DEBATES IN HIGH SCHOOL THAT WERE BETTER MODERATED AND MORE SUBSTANTIVE! What the hell was that?
As for the OMG who won, drama? Who gives a shit? Republicans think their guy won. Some Democrats think their guy won. Nobody won. It was crap.
Need to shut up. I mean, they can’t because it’s their job not to shut up but I am so godawful tired of the pretend suspense of the election and the other ginned up controversies and warnings that we have to deal with on the daily. I think they all need to sit down and put their heads on the news desk for a minute while the grown ups deal with reality.
“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” (Pages 183-89)
His thoughts on school integration?
Hubbard described black students as having a “a lack of discipline and ambition,” which he said has hurt the entire educational system.
Or how about some opinion on immigration?
… the immigration issue, both legal and illegal … will lead to planned wars or extermination. Although now this seems to be barbaric and uncivilized, it will at some point become as necessary as eating and breathing.” (Page 9)
And last but not least
“And perhaps the most important pledge I can make to the people of District 58, the citizens of Arkansas, and to myself, is to do whatever I can to defend, protect, and preserve our Christian heritage,” Hubbard says on his website. “Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, if we as a nation continue to turn away from those Christian principles and values upon which this great nation was founded, we will have truly lost everything worth saving!”
Because regardless of what you believe or don’t he’s decided that the Constitution doesn’t matter and this country is Christian and fuck you.
This is not even a little bit surprising. The right has lost its mind.
Also, THAT’S RACIST! Let me count the ways.
I mean totally aside from the fact that Africa was, in fact, totally fine without white folks intervention, (Racist concept #1 Africa was a savage land before white intervention. In reality, Africa had various, thriving cultures without any fucking help for Europe.) centuries of rape, murder, torture and other various horrors is not, ever, under any condition, better than the lack of those things. Also, at what point is viewing slavery as an abomination limited to black people? (Racist concept #2: The current understanding that keeping other human beings as property is anathema to everything civilized, and moral is a black thing that has been pushed on “real” society. In reality, most white people have functional souls, and as such wouldn’t even think of pretending that slavery was some sort of special gift.)
The educational system is suffering for a number of reasons. The color of the students in schools is not one of the reasons. (Racist Myth #3 The social economic and educational problems that some people of color face is due to laziness and not at all institutional racism. In reality, no. Just no.)
Everyone’s an immigrant and he needs to STFU. I’m so god awful tired of people acting like being white makes you a “real” American and more recent or non-Caucasian immigrants are somehow less.
This is not an anomaly. This is the direction the right has been running for years.
