I’m Tired Of The Hypocrisy #StruggleLogic
While playing Pro-Gun Bingo on Twitter today, it became apparent that the faction who care more about their guns than the safety of their fellow citizens had been fed a new talking point.
What part of “shall not be infringed,” do you not understand.
Um, the part where you suddenly care about how amendments to the Constitution are worded. Because these sections don’t matter much to you.
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Look, I hate to break it to you…OK, that’s a lie. I’m totally comfortable with informing you that if you feel the wording of the 2nd Amendment precludes any regulation on firearms yet you support voter ID laws, you fail logic and integrity forever.
Because forcing people to provide ID, which they have to pay for, thereby instituting a poll tax, is an abridgement of the right to vote. Voter ID laws set out new requirements, the ability to afford the necessary identification, in order for the citizen to exercise their right to vote. And that’s fine with the Right, because they know they need that kind of suppression in order to come anywhere close to winning elections on a national scale.
But yeah, don’t play like it’s anything other than hypocrisy.
Of course, they responded with “YOU TOO!”
First of all, logical fallacy, stop it. Second, not so much. As a general rule. liberals are perfectly happy with reasonable limits to voting. Age limits, for instance. as well as those people who have been declared legally incompetent, are generally not able to vote. That makes sense. We’re fine with that, just like we’re fine with reasonable limits on gun ownership.
Third, false equivalence. No one has the capacity to sign up to vote and proceed to murder 20 children with their shiny new voter card.
So, could you stop it please? You’re embarrassing yourselves.
There was an interesting story on the local NPR station this week about how the 2nd Amendment was crafted to cater to the slave holding states as they would not be able to depend upon the Federal government to intervene with force in the event of a slave revolt. So Madison, in order to appease Southern states, worded the amendment so that Southern states would be able to raise a militia in place of the Federal government to put down a revolt. This would seem to indicate that a well regulated militia was the intent no matter how disgusting the reason for the militia was.
OK, well given that slavery is no longer the law of the land what is the logic of keeping the Amendment based on slavery without altering it?
Good question for the defenders of that particular amendment. I’m not myself. I say if gun owners want to use this amendment (2nd) as a rationale for keeping firearms in their homes that the gun owner obeys all of it and that membership in a well regulated militia is required. Though I would challenge that piece as well as the original reason for the militia is no longer relevant.
