On Sportsmanship: Coach, This Is For Rudy

February 23, 2013

I’ll admit this news story got in my eye a little bit.

For those of you who can’t play video, the manager of the basketball team, who has special needs, was offered the chance to dress out for the final game of his senior year. In the final few minutes of the game, his coach even let him play! So far, an adorable but not singular story, right?

Those final few minutes of the game the team was only 15 points up. That means the lead they enjoyed was comfortable but not certain. The coach was willing to risk losing the game in order to give the kid, Mitchell, his moment. Mitch tried several times to make a basket but, sadly missed every time finally resulting in the loss of possession of the ball.

The other team only had a few seconds. They weren’t going to win but they had the ball. That’s when the magic happened and the story goes from cute to inspiring.

The opposing team’s player called Mitch’s name and passed him the ball. The opposing player gave away the ball so Mitch would have one more chance at his dream moment.

And you know what? Mitch made his basket.

He got his dream moment.

That? It’s golden.
